Repair vs. replace: a framework, not a rule

Think through equipment age, repair history, comfort, reliability and the condition of the overall system before you decide.

Repair usually makes sense when…

  • The system is under about 10 years old
  • The repair is a single, well-understood part
  • Comfort has been fine and energy bills are stable
  • The rest of the system (ducts, coil, controls) is sound

Replacement deserves a hard look when…

  • Repairs are recurring, or one repair approaches a third of replacement cost
  • The system uses phased-out refrigerant or has a failed compressor or heat exchanger
  • Rooms are uneven, noisy or humid despite repairs
  • You are planning other work — panel upgrade, remodel, listing the home — that touches the system anyway

Either way, get the diagnosis and the replacement proposal in writing, itemized, so you can compare them on the same facts. Our quote comparison tool can organize what you receive.
